I just completed a consult for a new series in the Ready to Read brand from Simon& Schuster. True “emergent readers”- levels A-D called “Ready to Go!” They are really working hard at creating high interest books that support early readers.
They include a picture glossary of characters from the story, word families, sight words and challenging vocabulary on the first page. A great resource for teachers! And… comprehension questions at the end!
Batman and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood are the first two to come across my desk.
My main thoughts on this new “brand”- Kids choose books based on interest. The Batman and other licensed titles that are currently out there are perfect for read a louds and proficient readers, but have proven to be way too difficult for beginning readers to enjoy without support.

I am really excited about Batman is Fast! It is so important to have high interest, low readability books available for our struggling readers grades K-3. Kids will not be embarrassed pulling this one out of their back pack! This series is a “win- win” for the “Licensed Reader” category! Grades Pre-K-3.
Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood may be a too young for the grade 2-3 audience, however it is a perfect fit for younger Daniel fans! Who Can? Daniel Can! Has kids asking and answering questions along with the characters. Strong central theme of friendship and working together.
