After receiving a Master of Science degree in Elementary Education/Reading N-12 in 1991, I became a reading specialist in the New York City public school system where I taught for 15 years. While there, I worked with teachers on staff development, instructing them in the Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading approach and balanced literacy classroom instruction. I advised teachers on how to choose appropriate reading materials and properly assign Guided Reading levels to books. Over the past 27 years I have been helping struggling readers build literacy skills that enable them to become confident learners.

unnamed-2In 2008 Read-Ability, Inc. was established. There was a “disconnect” between the trade book publishers and the needs of the classroom teacher.  As an educational consultant I have the opportunity to work with publishers as well as authors and editors in helping them understand how children’s and young adult trade books are used in the classroom. I assign Guided Reading levels, make curriculum connections, organize book collections for classroom market through catalog development, create Teacher Guides, and align books to the Common Core, TEKS and Next Generation Science Standards. This in turn creates instructional value and gives purpose to children’s literature and informational text for educators based on current trends and shifts in education.

My work with students, parents, publishers, authors, and educators has given me a deep understanding of how the reading process, books, environment, and implementation of instruction can provide rich, meaningful experiences that build a strong foundation in literacy skills and will allow ALL students to achieve a love of reading and learning. It is the job of a “community” to create a stimulating, positive, learning environment where all children will be successful.
